Hospital Barcoded Wristbands by October 2012

The Information Standards Board for Health and Social Care has approved a requirement for all hospitals and out patient facilities to issue patient wristbands with a barcode and human readable information on it.  The barcode will have patients NHS number, first and last name as well as date of birth.  Frank Riout from Zebra Technologies states, "the use of barcoded wristbands have been proven to reduce administration errors by 42%.

This is an amazing improvement so why not do it TODAY?  Like everything else in the US the committee can't decide what or when it should be done.  The first notice of a standard to barcoded wristbands was in 2009, with plans for it to be approved in 2010, and then in operation across the country.  Even the 2012 deadline was 15 months later than the original intention to have barcoded wristbands in July 2011.

Patient health should be the number one issue that this standard would provide but no one can make a decision.  I think they must have the same individuals working on this standard that are involved with the Super Committee working on the 2012 budget for the US.  Many meetings on the taxpayers dime with no results.  Well maybe next year?

Please read the article from E-Health Insider at www.ehi.co which has more information and opinions from many individuals.  But as we look to October 2012, G/S Data Solutions is working with our hospital customers to provide them with Zebra wristband printers, Honeywell scanners and IBM server storage to hold all the information.  We can provide a hospital with the total solution to help you become compliant in October 2012.

Lower Heels Better Economy? That is what IBM said..

As an IBM partner, I was surprised to read this article from their Social Media Analysis.  Usually women's heels stay high during a downturn.

According to a recent IBM study, (www.sacbee.com) "usually in an economic downturn, heels go up and stay up as consumers turn to more flamboyant fasions as a means of fantasy and escape," said Dr. Trevor Davis and expert from IBM.

You can see this throughout history, lower heels in the 1920's were replaced with high-heeled pumps and platforms during the Great Depression.  Again, lower heels in the 1970 with the oil crisis.  We have seen high-heels for the past 2 years...but designers are trending to lower heels in 2012.

I am not sure we can go out in celebrate that things are looking better in 2012 but this is very interesting when you take a historial view.  Trevor Davis gives us all something to think about with the article.

G/S Data Solutions believes and is seeing the business climate improving in 2011.  I am not sure this will help the economy but I plan on going out to purchase a platform shoe today.

Top 5 Tips for Choosing A Rugged Mobile Computer

Sorting through the smart phones, PDAs and ruggedized computers available for business use is no easy task. Dozen of manufacturers offer hundreds of devices in thousands of configurations but one will be suited for your particular environment and workforce.  We suggest 5 basic tips to narrow your search:

1.  Consider the environment and the user - Are the users working inside or outside is the first question.  There are only a few device that can be used outside and the top manufacturers are:  Motorola, Intermec, Honeywell and Psion to name a few.  The next thing is how big are the typical users hands and do they wear gloves?  This is important for determining the size of the device you purchase.

2.  What form factor do you select - This is important to the user and the software that you select.  If the users needs to see drawing, maps or any large document the rugged tablet works the best in that environment.  The manufacturers in the rugged table market are:  DAP, Glacier, Honeywell and Motion to name a few.  If the users can navigate with drop down screens, needs it to fit in their pocket or coat and maybe needs it for wireless conversion the rugged hand held is the best solutions.  The manufacturers in this market are:  Motorola, Intermec, Honeywell, Psion and many more.

3.  Stick to industry standards & certifications - Rugged mobile computers are specialized devices designed for collecting data and providing real-time information in non-office environments, but they should still adhere to enterprise standards for connectivity, security and development across the enterprise network.

4.  Simplify Support - It is important to consider the workers who will use mobile computers, but hose who will support them.  Support friendly features and compatibility with IT asset management and mobile device management systems help increase uptime and productivity while reducing support costs.  Most of the manufacturers offer a mobile device management solution that can work on multiple platforms.  The manufacturers with this feature are:  Motorola, Honeywell, Intermec and Psion.  But the mobile market has two other companies that do just device management which are Soti and Wavelink.

5.  Pay Attention to Power - Scanning and imaging, data collection and processing, wireless communication and other enterprise mobile computing activities all draw power from the device.  Most manufacturers offer an expected battery life but that would be a starting point.  Differentiating factors include:

  • Whether data is lost if the device loses power
  • How quickly batteries are rechargered
  • Whether the charging dock prevents overcharging
  • Maximum number of times a battery can be charged
  • Does the device itself give the user feedback on the battery usage

Advantages of Mobile Bar Codes

The mobile bar code is revolutionizing how we do business today.

Watch this outstanding video about the impact on businesses and customers in the retail and hospitality markets.  A mobile bar code can come in many different forms like; standard code 39, 2D codes (PDF 417, QR code and many more) but your scanner MUST be able to read all of the common codes that customers use today.  Code 39 is commonly used for coupons today and QR code can be seen on many printed advertisements like: posters and flyer's. Motorola scanners are available today to read all of the mobile barcodes on the market get yours at www.gssolutions.com.

With everyone having a mobile phone, ask yourself, which industries will be the next to use mobile bar codes?
